Filmaholic

Privacy policy

Effective 28 October 2026 ยท Below Studios

Filmaholic has no advertising and no tracking. The camera, the darkroom and your photos stay on your iPhone. What leaves it is what you choose to put in the community, which is public by design, and a monthly count of what you use in the app, which you can turn off. This page explains each.

On your iPhone

Camera
To show your film look live in the viewfinder and to take photos and videos, including from the lock screen. Frames are processed on your iPhone and never sent anywhere.
Microphone
Only in video mode, to record sound with your videos.
Photos
To save what you take and export. If you allow it, Filmaholic also reads your library to keep its own photos together in a Filmaholic album and in Your photos, to show your library when you pick a photo to edit, and to open photos you pick. This happens on your iPhone; your library isn't uploaded. Only a photo you choose to post leaves it (see below).
Photos shared to Filmaholic
When you share photos to Filmaholic from another app, copies are kept in the app's own storage until you've opened them, and are removed after a week if you don't.
Settings and looks
Your settings, saved looks, recordings waiting to finish, which film each of your photos was shot on, and a short technical log stay in the app's storage on your iPhone. Deleting the app removes them.

The community (optional)

The community lets you post photos, share film looks, enter photo challenges, and like and rate what other people make. You don't have to use it, and browsing doesn't need you to sign in. If you post, publish, like, rate, enter a challenge or set up a profile, Filmaholic stores that in Apple's CloudKit, in a public database that Apple runs for the app. It's tied to an identifier Apple gives Filmaholic for your iCloud account. This is not your Apple ID or email address, and we can't see either.

What's stored, and who can see it:

Photos you post or publish are re-encoded first, which removes their location and other metadata. Before a photo, profile photo or sample photo goes up, Filmaholic can check it for nudity on your iPhone, using Apple's Sensitive Content Analysis, if you've turned that on in Settings. The photo isn't sent anywhere to be checked. Blocking someone is kept on your iPhone, and also lets our moderators know.

Usage counts

So we know what to improve, Filmaholic sends a count of what you did in the app each month: for example how many photos and videos you took, which of Filmaholic's films they were shot on, and how often you exported, imported or used the community. It's numbers only, never your photos, what you wrote or where you were. It's stored in Apple's CloudKit with the same iCloud identifier as the community (only if you're signed in to iCloud), and only our moderators can see it. It isn't used for advertising or to track you across other apps. To stop it, go to the You tab, then Settings, and turn off Share usage counts.

Shared links and the App Clip

A shared look's link opens in Filmaholic, or in its App Clip if you don't have the app. The App Clip reads the public look without signing in. If you try it on a photo, the photo stays on your iPhone. The link's web page is hosted by GitHub Pages, which keeps its own server logs.

Moderation

Our moderators read reports, and can remove anything that breaks the community guidelines and stop an account from using the community. Something reported by several people stops being shown while we look at it.

Deleting your community account

In Filmaholic, go to the You tab, then Settings, then Delete my community account. This deletes your username and profile, your posts and challenge entries, the looks you've published, your likes, ratings and adds, the reports you sent, your notifications and your usage counts. Your looks and photos on your iPhone stay. You can also remove a single post or look at any time. If you can't use the app, email us and we'll delete it for you.

We keep community content until you delete it or we remove it under the guidelines.

Sharing and selling

We don't sell your data or share it with anyone for advertising. Community content is public because you publish it. Apple stores it for us; see Apple's privacy policy.

Children

Apart from the usage counts above, the camera and darkroom collect nothing from anyone. The community isn't intended for children under 13.

Your rights

You can see, correct or delete what you've put in the community in the app, or ask us to. We handle personal information under New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020, and we'll help with requests under other privacy laws that apply to you.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
